Paper petition details
Request for Parking Facilities for the residents of Susannah Street, London E14 6LS
We would like Poplar HARCA / Council to conduct a feasibility study to see as to whether the Square within Susannah Street, E14 6LS could be opened up to accommodate driveways to alleviate some of the pressures facing the residents of Susannah Street. We hope the following paragraphs will demonstrate the urgent need for additional allocated driveways:
Ida Street, which backs on to Susannah Street, once had a Square very similar in characteristics to that in Susannah Street, has now been changed to provide allocated parking spaces for the residents who reside inside the Square. This we believe sets a very strong precedence for a similar scheme to be arranged in Susannah Street.
Susannah Street doesn’t lie with a Conservation area, but it does however sit within a built-up area where there is very limited scope for additional parking facilities to be placed elsewhere. By opening up the square to create additional front of house parking spaces which we hope would then free up parking spaces which otherwise have been occupied by some of the residents of Susannah Street.
The Square in Susannah Street doesn’t have a thoroughfare which we believe could pose potential issues for emergency services, for instance, if a resident is taken unwell, an ambulance would have to park on the side of the street, thereby blocking traffic flow from in and out of Susannah Street. In the event of a fire, the access/exit to Susannah Street will need to be blocked off as the road is not wide enough for two vehicles to pass through, especially given the width of a conventional Fire Engine vehicle. These potential safety hazards could be mitigated by allowing thoroughfare into Susannah Street as part opening up the Square for allocated driveways.
Furthermore, as we understand, the Chrisp Street Market regeneration will create an additional 643 residential/retail dwellings/units which in itself will no doubt create significant pressure on the existing limited parking provisions within the immediate vicinity.
Having vehicular access to front of house, would allow those residents who wish to transition from fossil fuel to electric vehicles by having their own charging points and this will contribute towards our commitment to go green.
We very much hope you would lend us your support by signing this
petition to open up the square within Susannah Street to front of
house driveways.

Council response
Further to your petition from local residents regarding the
provision of additional parking for the square on Susannah
Street.
This area is part of a Popla HARCA housing estate and we have contacted them in regard to your request. I can confirm that we are also working with our colleagues in Highways to carry out a feasibility study to provide access to the Square for the provision of resident permit parking spaces.
As soon as we have further information on what can be achieved we will contact you again with an update.
