Petition details
Road Safety Measures Urgently Needed on Bow Roundabout connecting the A12, Bow Road and Stratford High Street.
We urge TFL to consider a combination of the following measures to improve safety and the environment for pedestrians:
- Signage indicating there are children crossing
- Fencing or planting around the roundabout to prevent children
falling into the road (particularly on the downhill slope towards
the West side of the roundabout)
Make cross walks more visible to prevent cars driving through
- Bring forward plans to create two bridges to connect Bow and
Sugar House Island
- Create visual markings on the road to make it clearer to cars
they are entering a new zone including colour on the roads and / or
on the pedestrian walk ways to show where pedestrian areas
are
- Introduce new lighting at night to make it clearer to cars they
are entering a new zone - perhaps use of decorative colour
lightning to illuminate the Bow sign on the roundabout
- Planting on the roundabout and along the pedestrian walkways
leading to the roundabout to help with ambiance, noise, air
pollution as well as to indicate to drivers they are in a
pedestrian zone
- Work with the local artist community to create a graffiti mural
on the underside of the flyover to provide a visual indication that
it is a pedestrian zone and create a more visually interesting
experience that local residents can be proud of

Council response
Thank you for your petition regarding the Bow Roundabout and apologies for the delayed response. Please see our petition response below.
TfL officers and Assembly Members met with five representatives of the community on 30th March 2023.
The representatives of the local community explained that they felt that the roads around Bow Roundabout and the roundabout itself needed a number of improvements to benefit pedestrians, particularly schoolchildren, and cyclists. To achieve this, it was proposed by the petitioners that TfL implement signage indicating that there are children crossing; fencing or planting around the edge of the central roundabout; making pedestrian crossings more visible to drivers; better visual markings on the road for drivers; better lighting; and adding more colour and art to the roundabout and flyover.
TfL are reviewing the proposals internally and will report back to the Assembly Members, the petitioners and LBTH once this review is completed.
