Council response
Thank you for submitting your petition to the Council. Firstly, I am very sorry to hear about the incidents that you are experiencing. We acknowledge and understand the negative impacts that crime can have on your well-being, and the overall quality of your neighbourhood. I want to assure you that the Council and our partners take these matters very seriously.
Tackling burglary is a key strategic priority for the Council, the Police, and the wider Community Safety Partnership. Whilst the police take the lead for dealing with these offences, we support them in several ways.
•We fund an additional 26 Police Officers working across the borough. Burglary is a specific priority for them. These council funded Officers help patrol the key burglary hotspots and target known offenders.
•We employ Tower Hamlets Enforcement Officers, who assist with patrols in burglary hot spots.
•We hold regular engagement events, gathering information and offering crime prevention advice.
•Our CCTV has recently had substantial council funding to upgrade it, we are able to deploy mobile CCTV where hotspots are identified.
•We fund and conduct cycle marking, which helps the police recover stolen bicycles, return them to their owners and prosecute offenders. A significant number of stolen bicycles come from burglars in the borough.
•We work closely with your local Police Safer Neighbourhood Team, patrolling and dealing with key crime problems like this together.
In September we held a Community Safety Surgery on Narrow Street. During this event we provided crime prevention advice to residents and visitors to the area. We funded ‘Dr Bike’, a walk-in service conducting simple maintenance on bicycles. We also offered cycle marking.
A further event is being held in Narrow Street, on Wednesday 20th November, where our Community Safety Team will be giving advice on burglary and cycle crime prevention, again this will include cycle marking.
In response to your petition, all the information reported has been recorded on our database. Darren Priest, our ASB and Community Safety Officer, is leading our response and liaising with the police to support them.
He has spoken with the local Safer Neighbourhood Team who have stated that there have been bicycles taken from sheds and communal areas and that these are classified as burglaries. Although there has been a reduction in offences, local Officers have been tasked to patrol Narrow Street and the surrounding areas, these patrols are taking place in both uniform and plain clothes. The team can be contacted via their email address which is. CEMailbox.Limehouse@met.police.uk
If you require an immediate response, please call 101 or 999 in an emergency. Crime and ASB can be reported also online in non-emergency situations at http://www.met.police.uk/report
I hope this offers some reassurance that the Council remains committed to addressing the issues raised in your petition in and around Narrow Street.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further clarification.
Yours sincerely,
Simon Baxter
