Council response
Thank you for the petition raised for Council on 23rd January 2019 regarding the above.I set out below my response to the issues that you have raised.
On the evening of 13th November a public meeting was held
attended by the Mayor, Police and Council officers. The residents
of the York Square, Chasley, Flamborough and Barnes Streets
vicinity were informed that the Council would consider the
installation of CCTV cameras in those areas if appropriate. It was
explained that the decision as to whether or not to install CCTV
would be on the basis of the evidence and facts available to the
Police and Council.
Subsequent to the meeting a number of services were deployed to the
area in order to address the specific problems of crime and
anti-social behaviour identified. These measures included a partial
Closure Order on a Tower Hamlets Homes property to the north of the
area outlined.
The Council holds monthly “tasking” meetings with its partners in order to allocate partnership resources and services effectively and efficiently. At the meeting on 3rd December 2018 it was decided to allocate Police and Tower Hamlets Enforcement Officers to patrol this location and the neighbouring area around St Dunstan’s Church should crime and anti-social behaviour be displaced to that location. From 6th December 2018 to 10th January 2019 there have been twenty two foot and additional drive through patrols undertaken in the area. The outcome of these patrols was that no incidences of criminal activity or anti-social behaviour were evidenced.
At the present time there is also a lack of reported crime or anti-social behaviour to the Council and Police via any of the methods available to the public. It is therefore the view of officers that it would not be the best use of resources to install CCTV in this locality at the present time.
If in the future it is evidenced that criminal or anti-social
behaviour activities are taking place in the area warranting the
installation of CCTV then this decision can be reconsidered.
I hope that this clearly sets out the actions we have taken and the
specific decisions we have reached in relation to CCTV. We will
continue to monitor issues in this area.
