Council response
Response:
The Council’s Arts Parks and Events service has investigated the complaints around the noise generated from the basketball court in Millwall Park in the late evenings. There are no quick and easy solutions to locking the court as the existing fence is too low for this to act as a deterrent to the court being accessed in the late evenings. There are currently no funds available to rebuild/relocate the basketball court or to introduce a noise baffling fence line. However, the basketball court at Millwall Park has been identified for works under the Parks Capital programme, and proposals for improvements to the amenities and to areas associated with ASB, will be examined in detail over the coming months. We are mindful that there are associated issues, including noise transmission from metal fencing and locking sites which will need to be considered.
Please note that the reason the court is being used late at night is due to it being lit by the lights which are required for the safety of the DLR. We did enquire of the DLR if the lights could be turned off or modified, but they responded that these were required to support emergency access.
The Council is in the process of developing a programme of capital investment in our parks. Millwall Park is on our priority list for investment and we hope to develop a masterplan for the green spaces in the south of the Isle of Dogs in the near future. We note the issues raised by residents and the basketball court will be looked at as part of any future capital schemes.
